Gutter work has one of the sharpest demand curves in home services. Searches spike after the first heavy rain of autumn and again in spring, and go nearly flat in between. Any marketing plan that spends evenly across the year is systematically wrong for this business.

Weather Is Your Media Buying Signal

The trigger is not the calendar, it is the first significant rainfall event. Homeowners notice overflowing gutters during the storm and search immediately afterward. Installers who increase bids in the 48 hours following heavy rain capture that demand at a lower effective cost than competitors who raised budgets on a fixed autumn schedule.

A simple manual rule is enough to start: check the forecast weekly, raise the daily budget the day before a forecast storm, and hold it for three days after. Then compare cost per booked estimate across the season against flat pacing.

Guards and Covers Are the Margin, Not the Gutters

Basic gutter installation is a commodity that gets bid against three competitors. Gutter guards and covers carry materially better margin and involve a different, more considered buying decision. The mistake is marketing them the same way. Guard buyers research for weeks; installation buyers call three companies in an afternoon.

The person whose gutter just fell off wants a truck today. The person considering guards wants to be convinced it will not need cleaning again. Those are two different campaigns.

The Estimate Process Is Where Companies Lose Money

Free in-person estimates are the industry default and they are expensive: a truck, an hour of drive time, and an hour on site for a job that may not close. Companies that pre-qualify by photo before dispatching cut wasted estimates significantly.

Reviews and Photos Carry the Local Ranking

This is a visual trade with obvious before-and-after evidence, and most installers never photograph anything. A profile with fifty before-and-after pairs and current reviews outranks and outconverts a competitor with a logo and eight reviews. Make the photo a required part of job closeout rather than something the crew does when they remember.

What to Measure

Cost per booked estimate and estimate-to-close rate, tracked weekly through the season. In a business this seasonal, monthly reporting arrives too late to act on: by the time a monthly report shows a problem, a quarter of the annual revenue window has closed.
